The line he comes from: the oculist golf man and the match-going mother

• When: UNDATED (his Tucson boyhood; his parents' generation runs from before his birth to their deaths, also undated)
• What: He is a Tucson native, son of "a dour and golf-addicted Green Valley AZ oculist" (scene 071) — a man he remembers as grotesquely tall ("six-six-plus"), flat-faced, chinless, never sweating, smoking long filters "in imitation of the President," a professional man with clients, indifferent to his son's tennis — a golf man Sr. describes with contempt ("He plays golf... A bodiless game of spasmodic flailing and flying sod. A quote unquote sport. Anal rage and checkered berets," scene 049) — and of a mother who "never missed a competitive match," brought fresh lemonade to the courts, and is dead by the time of the 1960 monologue ("my mother, who’s dead"). The wraith's later account preserves the family mythology's name for the grandfather: "the blank wooden man" (scene 162; see event 13). In his own telling the father never once came to watch him play — the standing grievance the whole timeline turns on (event 2). Note the appellation: speaking of his father's one appearance at a match, he calls him "the one and only Himself" (scene 049, p. 0165) — the same in-family title his grandsons will later use for his son. The family name itself, narrated (Hal-focalized), came "handed down paternally from an Umbrian five generations past and now much diluted by N.E. Yankee, a great-grandmother with Pima-tribe Indian S.W. blood, and Canadian cross-breeding" (scene 034) — the ancestry he stands in the middle of.
