• What: Alone in Viewing Room 6 watching his late father's cartridges, Hal is out of marijuana ("Bob-Hopeless") and in incipient withdrawal: he spits far more than his norm, keeps the wastecan close in case he vomits, and is nauseated. That afternoon in the Stice match he'd had "zilch in the way of a kinesthetic sense" — couldn't feel the ball on his stick, whereas for the last year the arm/stick had been an acutely sensitive extension of his mind. He is also tortured by an uncharacteristic recall failure: the lexical/eidetic prodigy cannot for the life of him retrieve the name of the ubiquitous child-actor in JOI's films (Wave Bye-Bye / Valuable Coupon / Low-Temperature Civics), whacking himself over the eye to dislodge it. Concealment beat: to Mario he calls Wave Bye-Bye "basically goo."
