• What: Concealment texture: Hal wants to get out of the office to go get high, and "a quick chew of Kodiak is out of the question for several reasons" in front of the administration. In the August recollection he registers the very mechanism of his secrecy — "The way he knew suddenly that he was going to go down and get high in secret in the Pump Room before showering was that it hadn't occurred to him to ask The Darkness about making some sort of arrangements to eat together." The Pump Room is his private ritual venue; his addiction announces itself in his own antisocial tells.
