• What: Schtitt delivers his set-piece sermon on the sheltering "second world inside the lines" — no cold, no wind, no "conditions," only the player, the tool, the ball, and the opponent — and singles out Hal ("our revenant," "Mr. consciousness of ankle Incandenza") to close it: asked where he will "occur as a player," Hal answers with prodigy poise, "The human head, sir, if I got your thrust... The game's two heads' one world. One world, sir," drawing Schtitt's laugh and "Play." A central Hal-Schtitt mentor exchange that both showcases Hal's articulacy and frames the tennis-as-refuge philosophy his arc is measured against.
