• What: Among the excruciating cranio-facial-pain paintings in the Nunhagen ads, one "particularly nailed nine-year-old Hal and had had him popping Nunhagen compulsively until his ears started ringing and didn't stop for almost a week" — a "vaguely familiar upscale male" with "a disembodied fist yanking a handful of brains out of the guy's left ear" wearing a look of "intense unhappy concentration." An early instance of Hal's susceptibility to dread and compulsive self-medication. (Several of the paintings are dental, "sent people scrambling to floss themselves bloody" — the recurring dental motif.)
