Luria P., his Girl-Friday — and the channel into Tine's office

• What: The stenographer of Rodney Tine, Sr. — Chief of the U.S. Office of Unspecified Services, architect of O.N.A.N. — "had long doubled as the stenographer-cum-jeune-fille-de-Vendredi of M. DuPlessis": Mlle. Luria Perec of Lamartine, county L'Islet, Québec, was simultaneously Tine's amanuensis and DuPlessis's Girl-Friday, and Tine's "passionate, ill-disguised attachment" to her is what put the U.S. intelligence chief's loyalties in question. Which direction the channel really ran, and how well, DuPlessis himself evidently doubted: Steeply tells Marathe that "your DuPlessis always suspected he tried to hold back on the information he passed sexually to Luria" — DuPlessis as the consumer of Tine's pillow-leaked secrets, suspicious he was being shorted. The professional conversationalist gives Luria a darker styling still: DuPlessis's "malevolent but allegedly irresistible amanuensis-cum-operative, Luria P———." Whether Luria served DuPlessis, ran him, or ran both men; whether the channel made DuPlessis one of the best-informed enemies O.N.A.N. had; and everything about Luria's own identity and later career — all recorded as attested only, nothing resolved.
