The next day, flattened by a sudden severe rhinovirus, Troeltsch feverishly speculates that Rader might have really sneezed while only pretending to pretend, transferring virulent rhinoviri to his mucosa. The pretend-sneeze is narrated as fact; the real-sneeze transmission theory — and any malice behind it — is Troeltsch's fever-speculation only, carried as suspicion, not event-fact.
