Daytime reveal: the refrigeration tech, the man in the hat, and the Al-Anon bits

• What: Three White Flaggers Gately's "never known or connected with that well" stop in to show empathy and support — Bud O., Glenn K., and Jack J. — and the costume gag finally inverts: "Glenn K. in daytime wears the gray jumpsuit and complex utility-belt of a refrigeration technician." It is Glenn K. who asks who the fellow in the hat outside is and supplies the description — "Tall, well-dressed, grumpy, cocky-looking, piggy-eyed, wearing a hat. Civil-Service-looking. Black socks and brown shoes" — pointing at the door's recurring ominous hat-shadow, a description that turns Gately's bowels watery with memories of a certain remorseless Revere A.D.A. Unsure how to be supportive, the three tell CPR jokes (Boston AA's name for Al-Anon: the Church of Perpetual Revenge): Glenn K. asks "What's an Al-Anon Relapse?" (Jack J.: a twinge of compassion), takes Bud O.'s disapproving finger-waggle of an Al-Anon Handshake, and "gives a lengthy impression of an Al-Anon mom watching her alcoholic kid marching in some parade and getting more and more outraged at how everybody's out of step except her kid" — none of them with any clue that if Gately really laughs he'll tear his sutures.
