What: In the sleepless small hours (abstinent pot-addicts "can pretty much forget about sleep for the first year"), Erdedy sits in the dim Ennet House living room with Day, Gompert, and a sleeping Bruce Green, while Day tells Gompert his boyhood story of the billowing black shape. Erdedy "has started to smoke cigarettes," joggles a leather slipper, and is not listening — "Completely incongruously," he says one non-sequitur, "His head's shaped like a mushroom," and "Day has no idea what he was referring to or talking about." The narrator's deadpan aside supplies the likeliest referent: the only thing broadcast at that hour is "The Mr. Bouncety-Bounce Daily Program" on the viewer, and "Mr. Bouncety-Bounce's head is in no way mushroom-shaped".
