The streetlet shootout: noncombatant on the lawn

• What: During the front-lawn confrontation in which three enraged Nucks pursue Randy Lenz and Gately is shot, Erdedy is a pure noncombatant: rousted for the nightly car-move (Lenz clowningly pantomimes his "Serene But Deadly Crane stance" at him on the way out), he stands "at bay" with his hands and car keys up the entire time — the endnote apparatus twice confirms "(Erdedy's hands still up, w/ keys)" — "rather likes" his gesture of noncombatant status, and at one point calls out to Joelle to get her head out of the whole picture. He notices, watching the veiled girl climb down toward the wounded Gately, that "this deformed veiled girl likes Don Gately in an extracurricular way, it would seem," and that "Joelle runs just like a girl." Afterward he naively suggests calling the police (greeted with scorn at his naïveté), and when a drunk E.M. Security guard bears down on the scene Joelle dispatches him — "Erdedy — deal with him": "Go over and look high-income and respectable at him. Verbalize at him. Distract him while we get him inside before the real ones come".
