What: When Mary Esther Thode pulls up on her yellow Vespa with the order for the Hal-Stice match, she catches Stice and Wayne at the front of the run; Hal is "a good half km. behind them with galumphers Kornspan and Kahn." The word does the work: Kornspan's manufactured mass makes him a back-of-the-pack runner, bracketed with Kahn, again defined by his body's relation to the group.
