• What: Post-Phiely, anti-molestation "diddle-checks" are mandatory at North American academies, and at E.T.A. the duty is contractually Rusk's: she "is supposed to hold a kind of distaff community meeting with all female players judged naïve and moppetish enough to be potential diddlees," because "Monthly diddle-checks are in Rusk’s contract because they’re in E.T.A.’s O.N.A.N.T.A. accreditation-charter." In practice the duty migrates to the Avril orbit: "Dean of Females Avril M. Incandenza presides over the diddle-check when Dr. Rusk is otherwise engaged, and Rusk is so very rarely legitimately engaged" that Avril's presiding is the norm — indeed, on 10 Nov the very fact that it's Avril in with the little girls is what makes Hal suspect Rusk has been pulled into the Headmaster's office for the disciplinary scene (event 8). The event is the page's cleanest structural datum: even Rusk's contractual, charter-mandated function is in practice performed by Avril.
