• What: Four Foss beats thread the shooting night. At curfew, "Chandler Foss and the spectrally thin April Cortelyu come in from someplace with postures and expressions that arouse comments and force Gately to Log a possible issue about an in-House relationship." His domestic footprint appears when Gately visits the sick Glynn in "The 2-Man seniorest males' bedroom": McDade is "illicitly sitting on Foss's rack reading one of Foss's motorcycle magazines," and the room's bedside table has "the little drawer in the bedside table where Foss keeps his ashtray just like everybody else" — Foss's rack sits in the seniorest males' room, of a piece with "near-alumnus" and Senior Res. For the nightly car-move he is on the roster by name ("Gately alerts Thrale and Foss and Erdedy and Henderson"). And when the Lenz/Nuck brawl has burned down to aftermath he gets the scene's driest bystander clause: "Chandler Foss is trying on the third fellow's plaid hunting cap" — the third fellow being the Nuck who shot Gately, by then half-nelsoned and stomped. No violence, no panic — souvenir-shopping.
