The Québecer melee: Green saves Gately's life

• What: Green returns from the dog-kill looking "godawful, skin potato-white and eyes vacant," missing curfew at 2336; he takes his week's Full House Restriction and a spot-urine hangdog, then, as the only licensed resident still up, volunteers to move Doony Glynn's car — and it is Green who rushes in to fetch Gately ("Come out.... Come now Gately.") when the vengeful Nucks arrive chasing Lenz. In the fight that follows, after Gately is shot in the shoulder and a third Nuck draws a second bead on Gately's head, Green grabs the gunman from behind in a half-nelson and forces the pistol skyward, deflecting the shot that would have killed Gately. Nell Gunther's kick drives the Nuck's head back into Green's face, breaking his nose, "but he doesn't let go." Afterward, bleeding, Green helps carry the shot Gately inside as ordered by Joelle. This is Green's decisive act in the novel's range.
