Identify

Boston AA's term of art for how to listen: newcomers are told to "sit right up at the front of the hall where they can see the pores in the speaker’s nose and try to Identify instead of Compare. Again, Identify means empathize" (p. 345) — hear your own case in the speaker's story instead of cataloguing the differences. When a speaker is honest about the desperation, "boy can they ever Identify" (p. 347).
