TL;DR

A 2010 Evergreen State College individual-study essay — an undergraduate, non-peer-reviewed piece deliberately written AS a Wallace pastiche — whose declared subject is "the Eschaton debacle on pages 380-442 of Infinite Jest" but which never delivers the promised close-read: it is a book-length "pre-essay instruction" arguing that essaying IJ is impossible, and it ends by printing "An Exhaustive Essay of pages 380-442… n/a". Its one substantive, archive-relevant argument is a MAP/TERRITORY reading of Eschaton: the game's "indiscrimination between map and territory" is "a mistake that sets a chain of events in motion which (a) reverberate through the rest of the novel and (b) let's us see the consequences of mistaking map for territory" — Wallace, Badger insists, "chose to start the chain of events… w/ the disastrous game of Eschaton" deliberately. Badger reaches this through Borges's "Of Exactitude in Science" (the empire-sized map) and the novel's own "eliminate one's map" = kill/suicide slang (map = the false self we present) — i.e. the SAME substantive/anti-simulation reading of Eschaton that Raizman frames as the "anti-Baudrillard joke" (Borges being Baudrillard's own source-fable), reached independently and without naming Baudrillard. This puts Badger squarely on the COUNTER-SIDE of eschaton-function (the adjudicated-winning side: "pure comic set piece with no point" is contradicted), joining mtz-ep06 and hf-raizman. A second thread reads IJ as designed to DEFY PASSIVE CONSUMPTION — the antidote leg of book-as-entertainment: "DFW created IJ to be read w/o passive consumption," the reader who wants meaning handed over free of work is the "reader-as-sobbing-grown-man," and "DFW denies any sort of satiation… and forces… the reader to work". Third, Badger re-attests (via his own error-bearing transcription) the well-known DFW KCRW-Bookworm Sierpinski-gasket structural quote and speculatively ties Kate Gompert's "triangular horror" (p. 650) to the gasket — a sierpinski-structure/annular-structure re-attestation plus a self-caveated ("Just theory") flourish. NOTE what is ABSENT: Badger treats Eschaton's "very intense calculus" and INDIR-acronyms as flavor and never touches the n. 123/321 math errors — so this is NOT an eschaton-math-error sighting (pemulis-fake-math remains a proposed slug elsewhere; the analog is untouched here).

  • "Eliminate one's map" = kill/suicide, and map = the false social self. "Throughout the novel 'to eliminate one's map' is to kill, commit suicide, or brutally beat in the face." "DFW creates the slang 'eliminating one's map' in his near future (our present) to connote killing yourself or killing someone else… If map is taken to mean the representation of our Self that we present to society then it is entirely appropriate". He extends the motif to the videophony arc (pp. 144-151): "humans are so concerned w/ their 'map' that they would go so far as creating a map for their map. Get it? Fucked right? So this 'mistaking the map for the territory' thing plays in on a ridiculous amount of levels".
  • IJ is engineered to defy passive consumption (the anti-Entertainment). "DFW created IJ to be read w/o passive consumption." "The novel (as a text, as a tangible piece) defies passive consumption and also (w/in the narrative(s)) relates the consequences of passive consumption". The reader who wants meaning without work is figured, via the pp. 795-808 Men's-Movement scene, as the "reader-as-sobbing-grown-man [who] wants and wants from fiction what they never work for… and 'need' an author to hand this over to them via text"; against which "DFW denies any sort of satiation, any sort of authorial handing over and forces… the reader to work for understanding by himself and for himself". The design intent: "The point was to create something that a reader couldn't 'veg-out' on and stare at w/o considering the implications of- or interesting facts a/b- the novel's world."
  • The essay performs its own thesis by refusing to be written. The whole piece is a "pre-essay instruction" whose recursive conclusion is that a true essay on IJ would have "to be even more in-depth and more fucking confusing and even longer than IJ," i.e. would have to become the novel (map = territory); so the promised "Exhaustive Essay of pages 380-442" is delivered as "n/a". A formal enactment of the map/territory and anti-closure logic — Badger's own form, not an argued claim about IJ's structure.
  • Sierpinski-gasket structure, re-attested + a Gompert speculation. Badger quotes the DFW KCRW-Bookworm interview — IJ is "structured like something called a Sierpinksi gasket… a very primitive kind of pyramidical fractal" that "looks basically like a pyramid on acid with certain interconnections between parts" — and reads Kate Gompert's "triangular horror" (p. 650) as "a hint at DFW's 'pyramid on acid'" (self-caveated: "Just theory").

The theory record's recorded "pure comic set piece with no point beyond entertainment" (gc-ep007) is adjudicated contradicted in the archive (see the structure adjudication — "the scene litigates its own map/territory point at D1, pp. 333/337"), with the substantive side already carrying mtz-ep06 and hf-raizman. Badger REINFORCES that adjudicated majority; he does NOT overturn anything. His route is Borges direct rather than Baudrillard, but Borges's map-fable is precisely Baudrillard's own source (raizman's "anti-Baudrillard joke," Note 8, quotes the same D1 map/territory shout: "It's snowing on the goddamn map, not the territory" — spacing collapsed; see that note's ledger #11 for the byte-exact form), so Badger and Raizman are the same reading reached two ways. So Badger is a RE-ATTESTATION, not a new datum — and via his own error-bearing transcription ("Sierpinksi," "whish," "discreet bits of information" for discrete, "That's one of things" missing "the," "Michael [Peach…]" for Pietsch; his word order also drifts from the canonical fan transcript, e.g. "went through I think some mercy cuts" vs. canonical "went through some I think 'mercy cuts'"). The only NON-derivative move is the Gompert-"triangular horror"→gasket speculation, which Badger himself flags "Just theory" — NOVELTY CHECK RUN AT AUDIT: "triangular horror" appears nowhere in the archive's theory record (no theory note holds the gasket↔Gompert link); it appears only in the archive's passage mining of the pp. 648-651 scene (the irony-sincerity passage anthology, as IJ dialog in the irony-erosion reading). Genuinely unlogged, but too thin and too hedged to carry weight — keep hedged exactly as the raw hedges it; no slug.
