Context
The Abiding vocabulary now runs the scene's own narration: Gately's escape-and-romance fantasy is introduced as his mind going "right over the second's wall" — the head's recon in action, three pages after he named it. The scene closes by auditing the fantasy honestly (wanting someone to take care of his mess = "the same delusion as the basic addictive-Substance-delusion"), so even the failure is filed inside the time-doctrine.
