The "at just this moment" simultaneity montage
Four-odd clicks to the northwest in the men’s room of the Armenian Foundation Library, right near the onion-domed Watertown Arsenal, Poor Tony Krause hunched forward in a stall in his ghastly suspenders and purloined cap, his elbows on his knees and his face in his hands, getting a whole new perspective on time and the various passages and personae of time.
Context
The montage's second panel, and the theme naming itself outright: "the various passages and personae of time" is the narrator's own retrospective index of scene 069's stall sequence — time as ants, fowl, assailant, hourglass, each a persona. The dry understatement ("a whole new perspective") over that catalog of horror is the joke and the cross-reference at once. Note the chronology: the montage's synchronized instant is 11 Nov, three days before 069's 14-Nov seizure dateline — so this is Poor Tony mid-Withdrawal, the personae still visiting.
