Context
The form-vs-inspiration seam, marked the first time it shows. The percentages said pass cross-court; Hal instead hits it "so hard his forearm's musculature stood starkly out," goes "inside-out," and "wrong-footed" Stice into standing "flat-footed and watching." The point is "faultless and on Hal's part imaginative, anti-book" — and deLint's chart logs it as "one of very few total inspired points from Incandenza." That's the whole question 130 will press, stated as a statistic: Hal's genius is nearly all book, and the inspired points are so rare the institution counts them.
