Hal v. Stice, continued: the fluid serve that's really all parts
At the start a violinist maybe, standing alert with his sleek head cocked and racket up in front and the hand with the ball at the racket’s throat like a bow. [...] But all these were only parts, and made the motion seem segmented, when the smaller crew-cutted jowly boy was the one with the stuttered motion, the man of parts.
Context
Steeply, hunting for images, keeps finding that even Hal's smooth serve resolves into a sequence: a violinist, a child making snow-angels, a man at a precipice, a hammering man. "But all these were only parts, and made the motion seem segmented" — the irony being that Stice is the visibly "stuttered" one, "the man of parts," while Hal's fluency is just a segmentation the eye can't catch. Both bodies are assembled from taught stages; only the seams show differently.
