why the top players lay off alcohol

quote

Top jr. players are for the most part pretty cautious with alcohol, mostly because the physical consequences of heavy intake—like nausea and dehydration and poor hand-eye interface—make high-level performance almost impossible.

Context

The conditioned body polices its own vices by pure performance-math. The best players stay off booze "because the physical consequences of heavy intake—like nausea and dehydration and poor hand-eye interface—make high-level performance almost impossible." It's the same logic as 085's no-smoking rule: the body is an instrument with tolerances, and anything that degrades hand-eye interface is simply incompatible with the ranking you're chasing. Sobriety here isn't morality, it's engineering. (The engine-revver-vs-edge-beveller drug taxonomy is a-r's.)
