supper at the best table: the regimen leaves no juice for anything else
Some junior players don’t have the emotional juice left over after tennis to face what dating requires. [...] The whole Tavis/Schtitt program here is supposedly a progression toward self-forgetting
Context
The athletic body's claim on the person is total, and this is the quiet cost of it: some players "don't have the emotional juice left over after tennis" for so much as a date — bold on the court, "slack and pale" anywhere else. The program is "supposedly a progression toward self-forgetting," and self-forgetting turns out to consume the self it was supposed to free, leaving E.T.A. "a comparatively unsexual place" full of bodies with nothing left over. The regimen doesn't just shape a life; it spends it.
