the Big Buddy sessions: the point of repetition is there is no point

quote

what it is is I'll tell you it's repetition. First last always. [...] through repetition they sink and soak into the hardware, the C.P.S. The machine-language. The autonomical part that makes you breathe and sweat. [...] The point of repetition is there is no point. [...] Until then you might as well be machines, here, is their view. [...] Wiring them into the motherboard.

Context

Troeltsch's repetition-sermon is the scene's purest body-as-machine statement: the strokes are drilled "over and over" until they "sink and soak into the hardware… The machine-language of the muscles," wired below consciousness "into the motherboard," so the body plays without thought. "The point of repetition is there is no point" — mindless reps for their own sake until fourteen, when "you might as well be machines" gives way to the character-and-concentration work. The doctrine that a player is first built as an automaton and only later handed a mind is stated here flat.
