Inside his own head Hal is arguing the body-as-machine doctrine from the receiving end: the thing he most needs the Deans to hear is that he is "not a machine," not "manufactured, conditioned, bred for a function." It is the athlete's protest against exactly the reduction scene 001 named — the E.T.A. regimen's product insisting there is an interior the conditioning didn't build — and the horror of the scene is that none of it comes out as anything but subanimal noise. The doctrine's human cost, stated by its finished instrument.
