Marathe believed that something in Steeply enjoyed his grotesque appearance and craved the humiliation of the field-disguises his B.S.S. superiors requested of him.

Context

(dd routed the field-disguise grotesquerie here.) The disguise is not only operational but psychological load-bearing. Marathe reads in Steeply a man who needs the humiliation the cover imposes — the "twisted parody of womanhood," the electrolysis pimpling his jowls — so that the apparatus isn't a burden the operative tolerates but a compulsion it feeds. Concealment-craft bleeds into character: the persona that hides Steeply also serves something in him, and 088 will build the B.S.S. dogma of deliberately humiliating personae out of exactly this observation.
