Gately's revenge burglary on the A.D.A. is engineered not to hide that a crime happened but to make it misreconstruct: he kills the power with his signature shunt, clips only the ground wire so the alarm cries "bungled job," and stacks valuables on the floor "like the perps hadn't had time to get them out" — and the A.D.A., "a jaded pro," walks the scene "touching the brim of his hat" and "reconstructed probable events" exactly as staged, scared-off-in-the-act. The op's payload is a false narrative, planted in the victim's own deductions. It's the domestic-crime version of the whole book's tradecraft: the best concealment doesn't erase the evidence, it dresses the evidence to tell the wrong story.
