Orin's technical interview (p. 971)
The face at eye-level belonged to the latest Subject, the dexterous and adoring Swiss hand-model. She stood looking at him, her arms crossed, smoking, exhaling greenly through her nose, then looked down to confer with another face, seeming to float at about waist-level, that belonged to the shy and handicapped fan who O.’d realized had shared the Subject’s Swiss accent.
Context
The honeytrap closes and all the costumes come off at once, side by side. The "adoring Swiss hand-model" and "the shy and handicapped fan" — the two operatives Orin met as separate strangers in 119 — now stand together outside the tumbler, and the shared Swiss accent he clocked "too late" resolves them into a single team. Months of what felt like adoration are revealed as months of surveillance; the disability and the nationality were both props (Luria "was not really Swiss"). The Subject's arms-crossed, smoking, greenly-exhaling stance is Steeply's own posture from the outcropping (077) — the whole apparatus of seduction laid bare as fieldcraft, its target sealed under glass.
