Orin, the hand-model, and the "survey" (pp. 598–600)
Behind him, under the blankets, the non-Swiss woman lay very calmly and patiently on her side, breathing silently into the portable O2-mask w/ canister from the purse beside her, one hand in the purse on the Schmeisser GBF miniature machine pistol.
Context
The seduction Orin thinks he ran was the trap that ran him. Throughout he savors his "clinical contempt" for the "terrified" married hand-model cowering under the sheets — "the sort of contempt you feel for an insect you've looked down and seen and know you're going to torture" — never registering that the woman is a professional lying calm on her side, oxygen-masked against suffocation, one hand on a machine pistol, waiting out the door-probe with a patience Orin only clocks "later." The honeytrap is total: even the Swissness was a costume ("the non-Swiss woman"). And Orin's own catalogue of recent conquests — "Swiss cuckolds, furtive near-Eastern medical attachés, zaftig print-journalists: he felt ready for anything" — is really his surveillance file read aloud, the disguised operatives circling him (the "zaftig print-journalist" is Steeply's Helen) mistaken by his vanity for lovers and nuisances. The predator is the prey; the insect is holding the gun.
