Gately-Joelle veil interview

The interview lays out the theme's deepest paradox of concealment, and the concealment-craft (not the deformity/shame, which is dd's) is what's ours. Joelle diagnoses the amateur's move first: "you hide your deep need to hide," and "take your desire to hide and conceal it under a mask of acceptance" — feign you don't care that you're being seen. Against that, Gately's line lands the reversal: "the veil's a way to not hide it." The veil doesn't conceal the face so much as openly declare that concealment is happening — it hides by advertising the hiding, the honest version of the "mask of acceptance" that lies. It is the U.H.I.D. gloss on the professionals' "openly hide" credo (142): the one-way instrument that conceals most by making the concealment visible.
