Context
The relay runs both directions. While Steeply spins the neuroscience, Marathe is doing counter-surveillance in real time — cataloguing Steeply's warming-routines "to remember," building the eidetic record the A.F.R. wrongly credits him with (038). Each man mines the other under cover of the anecdote: Steeply aiming a story at Fortier, Marathe filing Steeply's every micro-movement for his own superiors. The chat about pleasure-electrodes is a mutual intelligence-gathering session neither pauses to acknowledge.
