Eschaton debacle

The sedan enters the scene the way weather does — dropped into the same sentence-stream as the gulls, the cloud-cover, and the far-off ATHSCME hum, one more piece of ambient November. That placement is the tradecraft: a watcher who reads as landscape has already won. The car comes through E.T.A.'s raised portcullis — Unspecified Services physically inside the Academy's defenses weeks before "Helen Steeply" is ever announced to the Incandenzas — and the narration keeps the watcher hypothetical even as the car concretely parks, floating "Uninitiated adults who might be parked in a nearby mint-green advertorial Ford sedan or might stroll casually past" as though nobody's really there. The Nunhagen-Aspirin advertorial on the door is the disguise: a vehicle costumed as commercial clutter, unremarkable to everyone but the reader. The one adult positioned to watch the whole Incandenza world is the single thing on the property no player sees.
