Pretending to flip to a fresh page, Helen Steeply dropped her pen, which fell into the bleachers’ struts and supports and clattered as only something dropped into a system of metal bleachers can clatter. The prolonged noise made Stice take some extra bounces before he served.
Context
A small, deniable field action, staged by every appearance: the pretend page-flip ("Pretending to flip to a fresh page"), the ready spare pen ("produced another pen from the pocket of her fiberfill parka"), the clatter landing square in Stice's service ritual and measurably disrupting his rhythm. (The raw states the pretense only in the flip; that the drop itself was deliberate is inference, flagged in the apparatus alongside the n110 dusting.) Whether the intent would be to test the room's reactions, to rattle a player, or simply to see who watches her, the move reads as tradecraft: an act made to look like clumsiness, its effect real and its authorship unprovable.
