Marathe's instant recitation of Flatto's full dossier — "B.S.S. director of Input/Output testing," his address, his children, his sick child — is intelligence traded as dominance display, the A.F.R. demonstrating it has already mapped the men mapping the samizdat. The copy-census is mutual surveillance: each side knows the other's order of battle down to the operatives' home towns.
