Just as Gately’s whole recall of his screwdriver-and-sinsemilla beginnings tends to telescope into one memory of pissing orange juice into the Atlantic […] in just the same way, the whole couple years before he discovered oral narcotics, the whole period 13–15 when he was a devotee of Quaaludes and Hefenreffer-brand beer collapses and gathers itself under what he still recalls as ‘The Attack of the Killer Sidewalks.’
Context
The retrospect's thesis about its own machinery: Gately's past comes to him pre-telescoped, whole eras collapsed into single emblem-memories (one arc of piss into the breakers; one recurring assault by sidewalks). Recall as compression, named twice in one sentence — and the textual warrant for every chronology argument anyone has ever had about Gately: Carlisle resolves the section's dating strains (the age-nine riots, 173's Bam-Bam anachronism) as this very telescoping at work, which we record as his reading while our chronology ruling stands separately. (The singular "collapses" after the long compound subject is as written.)
