Joelle cleans and remembers the Incandenzas — "She’d barely thought consciously of any…"
She’d barely thought consciously of any Incandenzas for four years before Don Gately, who for some reason kept bringing them bubbling up to mind. They were the second-saddest family Joelle’d ever seen.
Context
The engine of the whole eleven-page recall, named in one sentence: four years of successful not-thinking-about-it, and then sobriety — specifically a person met in sobriety — starts the past "bubbling up" unbidden (the 092 verb, now in Joelle's head). This line is what makes the scene memory's subject rather than mere flashback; companion piece to Gately's Getting-In-Touch arc.
