endnote n.179: Meetings and a Diagnosis
Presumably North Shore AA meetings, but Gately never recollects hearing the word AA; all he remembers from the time is just ‘Meetings’ and a Diagnosis he’d construed as chivalric.
Context
The catalogued recall-failure endnote, adjunct to 166: the word "AA" never made it into storage — the era survives as two capitalized tokens, the latter misfiled under chivalry. Memory as lossy transcription of a life: what the faculty keeps from the using years isn't the institution that will later save him, just its furniture.
