What made it hard really to recall our old house’s living room was that so many of its appointments were now in the living room of the Headmaster’s House, the same and yet altered, and by more than rearrangement.
Context
A precise little theory of interference: Hal can't retrieve the Weston living room because its furniture still exists, relocated and repurposed in HmH — the present overwrites the past when they share objects. Memory as a medium that can be corrupted by its own referents surviving.
