Context
Geoffrey Day at the bedside, mid-monologue: "emergent sober memory" as a standing category — recovery's unbidden recall happening to someone else, in clinical shorthand, before the scene puts Gately through the full-length version. The confessor parade around mute Gately runs on exactly these emergences.
