Hal as accomplice; the Weston house (p. 956)
Yardguard and Wagenknecht’s heads popped in briefly and urged me to come have a look at The Darkness’s ruined map and withdrew when they got no response.
Context
Later the same blizzard morning, Hal still horizontal, heads popping in and out of the doorway. The interesting thing is the narration: Hal's own first-person prose adopting the idiom without quotation marks — "The Darkness's ruined map" as plain report. In the late-book stretch where Hal can no longer be sure his own face is transmitting what he intends, his narration quietly picking up map-as-face is a small, cold joke at his own expense.
