Mario's night walk past Ennet House (Language and Grammar)
This one is from ‘Sixty Minutes +/−’ ’s first year, when Madame still had a slight accent and often spoke on the show as if she were talking exclusively to one person or character who was very important to her. The Moms revealed that if you’re not crazy then speaking to someone who isn’t there is termed apostrophe and is valid art.
Context
Mario, braced against a police lock on Ennet House's lawn near midnight, hears someone's private tape of an old Madame Psychosis broadcast. Avril is the household's supplier of rhetorical terminology: she hands Mario the technical term and, with it, a permission slip ("valid art," provided you're not crazy) — the prescriptive-grammar mother classifying even loneliness by its correct figure. Pairs with n.294, below. Carlisle's reading, recorded not adopted: the broadcast itself is apostrophe to one absent listener, and the unseen taper is Joelle playing her own YPW voice back. (The spaced possessive after the quoted title is the raw's, preserved.)
