Context
Carlisle's narratorial-voice census, recorded not adopted: the narration here misspells as Gately would misspell — "orevwar" is au revoir filtered through a North Shore ear — and within this one section the same voice speaks for Joelle in her register ("counterfactual," p. 366), for Gately in his ("countersexuals," p. 367), and once as itself. His point is that the section's free indirect discourse is itself a linguistic performance, tuning its spelling and lexicon to whoever it's currently inhabiting; the orevwar spelling is the cleanest single-word proof.
