Page 5 of the novel: Hal, eighteen, sits mute before the University of Arizona Deans in the Year of Glad, whatever comes out of him now registering as inhuman noise — and his sealed-in mind is still running a full malaprop-adjudication service, weighing facilitate against accelerate on phonetic grounds while the room decides whether he's brain-damaged.
