Day vs. Gately: the Disease feeding on irony
Day is scanning the room for somebody else to engage and piss off so he can prove to himself he doesn’t fit in here and stay separated off isolated inside himself […] You can almost hear his Disease chewing away inside his head, feeding.
Context
The scene's diagnosis of what Day's irony is for. His cleverness isn't incidental to his sickness; it's the sickness's technique — a machine for staying "separated off isolated inside himself," goading beefs so he can get bounced and "make out like the relapse is Ennet House's fault and never have to confront himself or his Disease." Irony here is not a stance toward the world but a wall around the self, and the Disease is figured as literally feeding on the isolation the irony maintains. Day is "a wide-open interactive textbook on the Disease" precisely because his wit is so good: the better the armor, the clearer the wound.
