Bob Death — leather vest reading BOB DEATH, biker-chick clamped to his back, "required to be extremely cool in everything they do" — tells Gately it was good to hear him "share from the heart about his struggles with the God component," and the AA vocabulary sounds impossible in that mouth. The point isn't that the biker is soft; it's that the single-entendre earnest lexicon of the Program has colonized even the coolest, most irony-armored register in the room, and made it sincere without making it uncool. "Share," "component," "heart" — the exact words hip irony exists to sneer at — spoken straight by a man named for death, and it lands.
