Gately's dream-M.D. temptation — "The fact that he couldn’t even…"
The fact that he couldn’t even finish Ethan From in 10th-grade English and hasn’t got clue one about where ghostwords like SINISTRAL or LIEBESTOD mean or come from, much less OMMATOPHORIC, is just starting to percolate up to awareness when there’s a cold hand on his good shoulder and he opens his eyes. Not to mention ghostwords, which is a real and esoteric word.
Context
The haunting's hardest evidence: lexical residue. Words Gately could not possibly know — he never even finished Ethan From — are lodged in his head, and the noticing of them is itself conducted in a word ("ghostwords") he has no rights to. The wraith's brain-voice interface leaves fingerprints that survive waking, which is more than any of the scene's human visitors manage. (The syntax mangle and "Ethan From" are Gately's register, preserved as written.)
