Gately's dream-M.D. temptation (p. 885)
The old man probes a nostril and then examines the hankie with interest, just like the dream-wraith did.
Context
Ferocious Francis's visit — which the waking reveal at p. 890 will retroactively dissolve into dream — marked in real time with the wraith's own hankie-gesture. "Dream-wraith" as casual compound noun shows how far the wraith has colonized Gately's descriptive vocabulary; the echo is also the sequence's first tell that this bedside scene may be no more solid than the wraith's.
