Gately, the wraith, and the figurants (p. 843)
For a second, blinking and red with A.M. fever, he thinks he sees Ferocious Francis G. in the bedside chair, chin freshly shaved and dotted with bits of Kleenex, posture stolid, his old man’s saggy little tits rising slowly under a clean white T-, smiling grimly around blue tubes and an unlit cigar between his teeth and saying ‘Well kid at least you’re still on this side of the fuckin’ sod, I guess there’s something to be said for that there. And are you as yet sober, then?’ the Crocodile says coolly, disappearing and then not reappearing after several blinks.
Context
The wraith-night's residue in daylight: Gately hallucinates the predicted F.F. visit, complete with the freshly-shaved chin the wraith's reconnaissance reported — then the figure vanishes wraith-style, "disappearing and then not reappearing after several blinks." Scene 169 carries the fuller version of this visit, and it too is a dream-visit rather than a verified waking appointment; the preview blurs fever, wraith-interface, and prophecy.
