Gately, the wraith, and the figurants — "The wraith says he’d just paid…"
The wraith says he’d just paid a small quantumish call to the old spotless Brighton two-decker of one Ferocious Francis Gehaney, and from the way the old Crocodile’s shaving and putting on a clean white T-shirt, the wraith says, he predicts F.F. will be visiting the Trauma Wing soon to offer Gately unconditional empathy and fellowship and acerbic Crocodilian counsel. Unless this was just Gately himself thinking this up to keep a stiff upper attitude, Gately thinks.
Context
Wraith as reconnaissance: a quantum house-call on Gately's sponsor, with a verifiable prediction attached. What actually follows, though, is scene 169's bedside appearance — a fever apparition that dissolves at the p. 890 reveal — so the prediction never collects a clean waking fulfillment. Gately's tacked-on "Unless this was just Gately himself thinking this up" keeps the undecidability officially alive.
