From the obituary paragraph that closes the dossier: the only tribute JOI's peers can pay him is optical — chiaroscuro lamping, custom-lens effects, the signature deep focus — homage built so far inside the apparatus that no audience could notice it. Elegy conducted entirely in lens grammar, for a man whose audience-problem was terminal. ("elegaic" as written; the page cite here is good to about ±1.)
