Accomplice!, the blizzard, and the Weston house (pp. 945–946)
His thoughts are rendered via animated thought-bubbles, which Himself at that late-middle stage hoped the audience would find at once self-consciously nonillusory and wildly entertaining. […] The intercourse scene is done under bright lamps, without any sort of soft focus or light-jazz background score to lighten the atmosphere of clinical detachment.
Context
The shot-for-shot narration's technical spine: every device Hal itemizes is an anti-illusion device. Animated thought-bubbles meant to be "self-consciously nonillusory and wildly entertaining" at once (the late-middle JOI trying to hold both poles of the entertainment-v.-art fight in one gimmick), and lighting that refuses every softening convention — bright lamps, no soft focus, no score, "clinical detachment" as a photographic value. Hal narrates the cartridge in present-tense shot description for two full pages; this passage is arguably the book's longest sustained piece of embedded film-viewing narration outside the Mario screenings.
